MY MALAYSIAN TRIP by Joanne Datangel-Gallardo, MD
In February 25, 2015, I packed my bags and flew to Malaysia to join Pastor Doug Kelly, his wife Cathy and a new friend Engr. Richard Jarvis for a 5-day visit to Pastor Eu Hong Seng’s church, the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church. I was hoping to help Pastor Doug minister there. However, what I saw astounded me.
Visiting MALAYSIA for the first time in my life has opened my eyes. In contrast to my country, the country is pretty progressive and developed. In one of the Christian Churches though, I saw people who love God above all else. The humble servants were owners of factories, top businessmen, director of an international engineering company, doctors, etc. Yet, they are ready to serve us and each other in church as dishwashers, trash collectors, cook, tithes and offering collectors, and etc. Even though each of them have their own cars, I never found even an ounce of indifference to the poor. They were interested in the Lord and the things of the Lord. They somehow have gone past the mentality of “what about me” and have moved forward to “what do you want me to do, Lord”. In return, God made miracles in the church and in their individual lives. I found this in the lives of Wai Yin Ng, Michelle Phong, Eugene Yeo, Pastor Eu Hong Seng, and Lisa and her family.
Somehow, I have found the same hunger in the spirit with the Filipinos. Poverty may be a rather conspicuous factor, but our people’s heart is to help the other brokenhearted people draw near to God. We’ve learned to live despite of the hunger, the lack of better jobs and the poor housing circumstances and help bring poorer people in realization that the Lord is alive, is WILLING and is ABLE to give us what we seek, if we draw near to Him. In return, God also made miracles of healing, financial support, deliverance in the church and in our individual lives.
One thing is for sure. Malaysia. Philippines. USA, Canada, Mexico. We may be oceans and economies apart, but we serve the same GOD. The same GOD who speaks in thunders and lightnings, and who also speaks in a still small voice. The same GOD who heals, delivers, provides. He is the same God yesterday, today and forever. The God of Malaysia is the God of the Philippines, USA, Canada, Mexico and the world.
We just need to keep this in our hearts and learn from our brothers. One day, the Filipinos will be the ones to help our nation and other nations who need God and His tangible love.
